Beginner level

This unit is all about having fun using the intention of playful animals. The main goal is to teach students about choreography basics like motifs, actions, and dynamics. They will learn and refine a specific technical motif to improve their performance skills. Students will also create their own movement sequences using choreographic principles.

Space and Relationships

Beginner level

This unit is all about spontaneity, creativity, teamwork and problem solving and helps students build their resilience as learners. The main goal is to teach students to be savvy in the key choreography skills; actions, space, dynamics and relationships. This unit is taught through the eyes of some exceptional current choreographers.

Dance Styles – A Linha Curva

Beginner level

This unit is focused on creating a whole-class dance piece based on ‘A Linha Curva,’ a party dance inspired by Brazilian culture. The main goal is to teach students the styles of Samba, Capoeira, and Contemporary Dance. Students will perform and create movements using these styles.

Floorwork and Contact Work

Intermediate level

This unit aims to spark students’ creativity and enable them to build confidence in floorwork and contact work dance skills. The main goal is for students to explore movement that can be created on the floor and to build trust as they explore the sense of weight sharing and lifting with a partner. These skills are developed into a group choreography piece using traveling and transitioning techniques.

Hip Hop/ Street Dance

Intermediate level

The main aim of this unit is to teach students about the stylistic features of the street and hip-hop dance genre while enhancing their physical abilities, including actions, balance, coordination, control, strength, and isolation. Students will also have the opportunity to infuse their own creativity into the genre by creating their own phrases for tutting, strobing, waacking, popping, and locking.

Choreography – Shadows

Intermediate level

The main aim of this unit is for students to explore improvisation techniques and creative tasks to generate movement material, using ‘Shadows’ by Christopher Bruce as their stimulus. They will learn to create their own movement from scratch, centred around a family dynamic experiencing fear of what lies outside their home.”

Pre-advanced level

This unit starts to explore the history and repertoire of three different dance styles including: Lindy Hop, a high-energy swing dance combining acrobatic moves and African-American styles; Old School Dance rooted in Hip Hop culture with community and self-expression; and Afro-Commercial dance inspired by African cultures with fluid movements and infectious rhythms.

This unit helps students develop their choreography skills using visual (Erik Pickersgill’s ‘Removed’ photography) and kinaesthetic (Diversity’s Connected Tour) stimuli.
